Cryogenetics

- preserving aquatic genes

Cryogenetics AS has developed innovative cryopreservation techniques for milt from Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua). Cryogenetics technology is currently in use both by the aquaculture industry and in conservation programs.

Cryopreserved milt - new opportunities

Cryopreserved milt has many advantages and possibilities, and allows:

  • Conservation of genetic diversity from wild stocks
  • Conservation of genes from valuable broodstock
  • Crossing of year classes – reduced breeding costs
  • Worldwide exchange of disease-free genetic material
  • Out of season egg production
  • Diversity in breeding

Sound scientific foundation - reliable results

Cryogenetics’ unique cryopreservation protocols are fine tuned in trials involving more than 2000 fertilization batches and more than 300.000 eggs. Fertilization results achieved with frozen milt from Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout and coho salmon are comparable to that of fresh milt and better than any comparable technologies.

Unique products and services

We offer specialized cryopreservation containers for large milt volumes (> 10 mL) with a standardized number of sperm cells per unit, simplifying storage, thawing and fertilization.

Cryogenetics offers a ”total concept” including shipping of fresh milt, packaging and freezing in specialized units, storage, thawing and fertilization for salmon, rainbow trout and cod. We offer a licencing option based on quality services throughout the process to ensure the best possible fertility results for the customer. In addition, Cryogenetics will develop complete cryopreservation protocols for specific aquatic species on request.
