GenderGuide AS is an entrepreneurial company based on novel technology developed by the International Research Institute of Stavanger (IRIS), Norway. While doing research on accumulation of environmental pollutants from the oil industry in marine organisms, IRIS discovered that protein expression patterns in blood and mucus from fish and shellfish were different in male and female individuals.
Gender matters
GenderGuide's discovery makes gender selection possible at an early life stage. This is of use in e.g. aquaculture, where all-female or all-male populations can be desirable, depending on the species. GenderGuide technology is an ethically superior alternative to hormonal treatment, and leaves the fish unharmed and unaltered. Currently, the company is expanding their R&D activities with the goal of bringing novel solutions for gender determination to both aquaculture and agriculture.
