Cryogenetics expands in Canada and Chile
As part of its efforts to offer services and technology for cryopreservation of fish milt to fish farming companies and egg producers, Cryogenetics AS has established subsidiary companies in both Canada (British Columbia) and Chile.
Cryogenetics is currently in the process of establishing laboratory and storage facilites in both countries. These facilities are the first to be established outside its main facilities in Trondheim, Norway, where Cryogenetics has supplied the Norwegian and Scottish aquaculture industries with milt cryopreservation and storage services since 2003. With the recent expansion, Cryogenetics AS will now be able to offer freezing services and safe storage of cryopreserved milt also to Canadian and Chilean customers.
Cryogenetics AS believes freezing of milt will be seen as an increasingly cost-effective technology for the aquaculture industry. In particular, if salmon egg production is moved to land-based systems, as is currently planned in Chile, production cost per egg is expected to double. Under such production regimes, application of freezing technology is advantageous to efficiently utilize the production potential of each male. As the industry in Chile ramps up its egg production capacity in order to replace the volume that previously was imported, cryopreservation tools will greatly contribute to ensure a high quality production even off-season.
Innovation Norway has actively contributed to this process.
